Are Emerging Managers Better ?

This quarter our Research Insight looks at the question of manager size and how smaller or emerging managers as a group compare to the broader manager universes in terms of return and risk. The conventional wisdom is that emerging managers as a group do outperform their larger competitors, but is that still the case and what about risk? Once you consider risk are emerging managers still better? Does it hold true for both the large cap and small cap categories?

The most important studies on this topic were completed prior to the market collapse and subsequent rebound over the past two years. Because studies like this can be very time period dependent, it would seem to be a good time to revisit these questions by looking at the most recent data.
